This little mountain (about 10.000 Ha, 25.000 acres) call Sierra de Carrascoy, is where I grew up. How can you place the mountain in the world, HERE. My father used to work in a big farm on this mountain, so I had the chance to explore what was going on in these hillsides.

(Spanish) Esta página esta criando telarañas desde hace un tiempo, todo lo contrario que mi trabajo como investigador. Trabajo en un departamento de Excelencia del CSIC, el Departamento de Riegos del CEBAS, y dentro de éste en el grupo de Agua y Cultivos. Somos un grupo con gente muy diversa en cuanto a bagaje profesional. Por fin tengo un proyecto propio, gracias a la Fundación Séneca de la Región de Murcia, trataré de hacer más eficiente la fertilización nitrogenada en lechuga cuando el agua para riego es salina o es escasa. Llevo unos 4 años aquí, trabajando en diversos proyectos, en un montón de cultivos y en colaboración con empresas, universidades, otros centros de investigación y con agricultores. El trato con los agricultures ha sido lo más duro (por mi naturaleza), pero al mismo tiempo lo más enriquecedor.

(Broken English) This page has been breeding cobwebs for some time now, quite the opposite of my work as a researcher. I work in a department of Excellence of the CSIC, the Department of Irrigation at the CEBAS, and within this, in the group of Water and Crops. We are a group with very diverse people in terms of professional background. After many years I have my own project, thanks to the Seneca Foundation of the Region of Murcia, I will try to make more efficient nitrogen fertilization in lettuce when the water for irrigation is saline or is scarce. I have been here for about 4 years, working in differents projects,  in many crops, and in collaboration with companies, universities, other research centres and farmers. Dealing with farmers has been the hardest, but at the same time the most enriching.

2. RESEARCH

My background as researcher is a cocktail of plant nutrition and plant physiology sciences, with experiments in the field, greenhouse, growth chambers and in the lab, plant species that include Rosemary, Henna, Wheat, Pepper, Tomato, and Arabidopsis, and key words that include fruit production, fruit quality, fertilization, salinity, drought, and climate change. I think such as mix is something unusual today, because as much you cover as less you tight or as WordReference say, "Jack of all trades, master of none". The good think is that I do not want to be master of none, and I firmly believe that I can take advantage of this mix to understand plants and what matter and what not, in order to perform the experiments I am working on.  

Something quite stable during my career is that I have worked always with the whole plant to  understanding how they respond to the environment. Now (and with a little of luck also in the future) I am working on the response of different plants to nitrogen dose and source (nitrate, ammonium and amino acids) with the goal of maximize sustainable productivity of agricultural system by increasing nitrogen use efficiency. Nitrogen, probably the best friend of plants, very often limits production and it is easily lost from agricultural systems to the surrounding environment where it becomes an economic loss to farmers that can degrade air and water quality.  My work couples classical plant physiology approaches with modern cell biology tools thanks to the researcher team I am working with. We use a variety of experimental technicques, including growth experiments on control climate chambers, leaf gas exchange, biochemistry, microscopy, metabolite analysis, isotope discrimination and 15N labelling.
